If you are after a little more rigid workout; there are trails all along the downtown West Mountain, Gulfa Gorge, and at the State Park.       DID YOU KNOW?

  YOGA Offers Many Health Benefits

Adapted from How to Feel Fabulous Today! by Stephanie Tourles (Storey Books, 2001).

If you’ve been apprehensive about attending a yoga class because you’re afraid you won’t be able to bend into the shape of a pretzel, never fear! Yoga is a gentle, slow-moving exercise that helps to create awareness necessary to be in tune with your body. All that matters is that you do your personal best. If you can’t touch your knees at first, no problem: postures can be modified to accommodate your current level.

Practicing yoga is a perfect way to help deal with Western cultural problems of incorrect posture, aggressive lifestyles, job stress, demanding family lives, overeating and indigestion, and stiff muscles and joints.

The many benefits of yoga include increased flexibility, profound relaxation, clarity of thought, and improved muscle tone and strength, as well as improved balance, coordination, concentration, and oxygen intake.

Yoga practice can also help manage anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, heart disease, menopausal symptoms, migraines, multiple sclerosis, and osteoporosis.

HotThermal Spring Waters Have Healing Powers....

in the lovely "Spa City"-Hot Springs

Balneotherapy - Healing with Water
The Ultimate Guide to Taking the Waters, by Nathaniel Altman.
Eight ways Balneotherapy Heals:

* Bathing in Hot Springs gradually increases the temperature of the body, thus killing harmful germs and viruses.

* Thermal bathing increases hydrostatic pressure on the body, thus increasing blood circulation and cell oxygenation. The increase in blood flow also helps dissolve and eliminate toxins from the body.

* Hot springs bathing increases the flow of oxygen-rich blood throughout the body, bringing improved nourishment to vital organs and tissues.

* Bathing in thermal water increases body metabolism, including stimulating the secretions of the intestinal tract and the liver, aiding digestion.

* Repeated hot springs bathing (especially over 3- to 4- week period) can help normalize the functions of the endocrine glands as well as the functioning of the body's autonomic nervous system.

* Trace amounts of minerals such as carbon dioxide, sulfur, calcium, magnesium, and lithium are absorbed by the body and provide healing effects to various body organs and system. These healing effects can include stimulation of the immune system, leading to enhanced immunity; physical and mental relaxation; the production of endorphins; and normalized gland function.

* Mineral springs contain high amounts of negative ions, which can help promote feelings of physical and psychological well-being.

* The direct application of mineralized thermal waters (especially those containing sulfur) can have a therapeutic effect on diseases of the skin, including psoriasis, dermatitis, and fungal infections. Some mineral waters are also used to help the healing of wounds and other skin injuries.

Indications for Balneotherapy
Over the several hundred years during which the science of medical balneology has developed, physicians have been able to identify the health conditions that can best be treated by healing springs. The following list of indications for balneotherapy is based on the research of Yuko Agishi, M.D.

HEALTHY DIETARY TIPS

The 5 Basics

How many of us dream to eat such fresh and flavorful food year round, even in the north? Not to be discouraged, when you shop for groceries, you should always put the things you buy through a mental screening process that is focused on five basic rules. The result is wonderful whole food year round, if not always perfectly fresh.

Here are the five basic rules for healthy food shopping. Be forewarned that most of the items that fill up the average shopper’s cart today won’t pass the test and would need to be left in the store.

1. Buy only real, whole food, and eliminate refined, processed, or genetically modified food.
2. Buy local and seasonal food whenever possible.
3. Buy organic produce whenever possible.
4. Avoid additives such as artificial sweeteners and
preservatives.
5. Buy animal products from farms that raise them humanely.
